Embryonic – These stem cells are found in embryos around 3-5 days old and are harvested through in-vitro fertilization. These are more coveted as they are pluripotent which means they’re not limited to repairing only the area they’re found in. They have the ability to create any type of cell needed to repair virtually any tissue found throughout the body.
Adult Pluripotent Stem Cells – These are adult stem cells that scientists have altered to be pluripotent. As mentioned, adult stem cells are often limited to only healing the area they’re directly found in. However, scientists have been able to adjust adult stem cells to do the same as embryonic stem cells.
Amniotic Fluid and Cord Blood Cells – As the name would suggest, these stem cells are retrieved from the umbilical cord or amniotic fluid right after a birth has occurred. These stem cells are often frozen just in case they’re needed to help the child in the future. This has been extremely useful in treating various cancers dealing with the blood.
